I've been trying to be a better mom and get the kids out of the house a lot more and having more focused activities for them. I've been taking them to the park or a playground almost every morning and because I really wanted to help Owen with his language learning I decided to do a mini preschool lesson with him and June just after their nap. So far he's loved it!
Mini Volcanoes
June, of course, had to have one too.
Oops.
Lava lamps.
It's been really fun to see how they react and where the lesson takes us. Usually once the "activity" is over I just let them do what they want with it. A few days ago we did milk painting and they spent a good 30 mins afterwards just moving the colored milk back and forth in pans outside. This turned into a water fight while I was hosing them down and then a bubble bath and before I knew it Tim was coming home from work! We've seen a lot of improvement in Owen and June both as well so it may not be the magic answer but it's definitely helping. :-)

You are such a good mom, seriously amazing!! Your kids are so adorable too... I love the look on June's face in the picture where she is up on the table.
You're such a good mom. Sometimes I wonder if I stifle my kids' creativity because messes (actually, only some messes) and other random little drive me nuts.... I need to be a better mom like you. I love your kiddos. They're so flipping cute I can barely stand it!
MyLyn you are a great mom! You may have gathered from our blog and even from when we lived in Abq, but we have been dealing with all sorts of delays with our boys and are now specifically focused on speech for both boys. We've been doing a lot of different therapies, but honestly, they start doing more once they're ready (which is frustrating)! As everyone says, kids are so different! Both of our boys are still behind, but they're moving forward. L talks alot but you can't understand him well, while Z says a lot of words clearly, but doesn't string words together usually. Anyhow, I bought the Your Baby Can Read DVD's, just to help get them exposed to different words and phrases. I had no intention of them learning to read. Anyhow, the DVD's are great! Both of my boys' vocabulary just skyrocketed with them (they loves to watch the kids "do" what the word is). Z has also learned how to read about 200 words (L doesn't care about reading, which is fine--it's not normal for 2 yr olds to anyhow), but that's still not the focus. We're on the brink of normal "talking" and who knows--I'm sure it's a mixture of everything we're doing including once they're ready, but the DVD's are an idea. BTW, your preschool activities are way more fun than our house!!
We've been trying to add more structure as well. For me, it takes so much planning and work, but it's always SO worth it. Thanks for more inspiration! Also, that wood embroidery thing you made for your anniversary is probably the most amazing thing I've ever seen! What a fantastic idea. I just LOVED it!!
You are amazing!! I always think about doing stuff like this but i get so caught up with everything else going on during the day! So i repeat you are amazing!
Thanks everyone! The nice comments help me to keep doing it, even on the bad days! I'm just trying to do what I can to help Owen with his speech.
Kari- I'm NUTSO about messes too. I often have to remind myself over and over in my head that things are washable and can be cleaned up. It's taken me awhile! And you better believe that mess was cleaned up the second he was done with it all!
Holly-Have you tried the Signing Time Dvds? Owen has really loved those lately (we borrowed them) and it's definitely getting him more exposed to everyday language. He's added a few words to his vocabulary since doing those. I'll definitely look into the "Your Baby Can Read," as well--anything to help, right? Thanks a lot! Miss you!
